ABYMC shares cool foods, recipes, food science, and
I’m Thomas Smith, a content creator, photographer and hobbyist. I originally launched ABYMC in January 2004. At the time, I called it the Association of Backyard Metalcasters.
I founded the site because I was connected to a tight-knit group of hobbyist metal casters who connected in online forums and shared our knowledge about metal casting, metalworking, blacksmithing, and more.
As a professional food and travel photographer and a food writer with bylines in the Bold Italic, the Bay Area Telegraph, and more, I realized that I wanted to expand ABYMC beyond the original type of creation (metalcasting) and to a type of creation (food and cooking) that more people could enjoy.
At the same time, I wanted to keep the deep engagement with techniques, and the scientific aspects of my original metalcasting hobby intact, combining those with my love of food.
The result is ABYMC today. We cover food and cooking but through the lens of science, technique, experimentation, and frugality.
